On the Innocence of Muslims movie and unrest in the Middle East

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve heard that the US Ambassador to Libya was killed during protests in response to an un-watchble movie on YouTube. Some of my friends were Tweeting about the topic and one idea popped up that is especially dangerous in my mind.

Freedom of expression is one of the most important freedoms that we as Americans enjoy. It’s so important that it’s part of the First Amendment. The idea that we should have laws to limit our speech because of how extremists in the Middle East reacts is the actual definition of a hecklers veto. It’s a slippery slope that’s hard to stop once you start down. Are we to have more limits on our freedom of expression and religious freedom because of how Muslims in the Middle East will react? I’m an Atheist and that’s pretty offensive to a sizable percentage of people in the Middle East. What about women who don’t cover themselves? Allowing extremists a hecklers veto on our freedoms is similar to blaming a rape victim because she dressed too provocatively.

I deeply regret the loss of life because some idiot in CA made a dumb video but that doesn’t change my  mind. Our freedoms are important and we should fight for them.

Edit: Check out this really great article by Sam Harris.
